A Markdown file at your site root that gives AI models a clean, curated map of your most important pages — a project title, a one-line summary, and grouped links — without the navigation, adverts and scripts a normal page carries.
Large language models have a limited context window and no patience for HTML clutter. llms.txt hands them a pre-digested index instead of asking them to parse your whole page.
This is a real, actively maintained community specification (llmstxt.org, proposed by Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI in 2024). Adoption is growing, but recent audits found no measurable link between having an llms.txt and being cited more by AI answer engines, and some major search providers have said outright they don't use it. Worth doing well; not a guaranteed result.
